Where BDC Opportunity Leaks

Your BDC may be doing the work. The question dealership BDC training rarely asks is whether the store is converting the opportunities the BDC already creates. Every stage below is a place opportunity quietly disappears.

The Same Standard as Your Sales Floor

Whether your leads are handled by a BDC or the sales floor, your store should know the same core numbers: response speed, internet close, phone close, appointment set, show rate, sold rate, and CRM follow-up compliance. BDC Genius shows you whether your BDC is being measured to that same standard — and where the gap is.

Case Evidence

From manager reports at a store that ran a disciplined BDC process. These are case figures, not a guarantee of your results.

Internet close, materially above the recalled starting range.

In the extracted manager-report period, internet close rates averaged approximately 14.7% — materially above the recalled pre-training 4%–8% range. It shows the size of the performance gap a disciplined BDC process can uncover.

Phone measured as a revenue channel.

Across the same reports, inbound phone sold-close ranged roughly 10.4% to 20.0% (about 15.7% average) — phone was measured and managed as a revenue channel, not treated as clerical activity.

Parity, not hype.

Whether leads ran through a BDC or the sales floor, the strong stores tracked the same numbers. The point isn't that a BDC beats sales — it's whether your BDC is being held to the same standard.

Figures are from client manager reports over a defined period and are used as case evidence. Your results depend on your store's process, market, and inventory. The diagnostic estimates the upside; the implementation call verifies the path.

BDC Performance Questions, Answered

Practical answers on BDC manager training, BDC appointment setting, and dealership internet lead follow up.

What is a good BDC appointment set rate?+

Most stores we look at land somewhere between 10% and 20% of combined internet leads and inbound phone calls. Twenty to thirty percent generally reads as strong, and above thirty percent is unusual and typically comes from disciplined BDC phone training plus tight source quality. Treat any single number cautiously — set rate only means something when it is measured the same way every month and paired with show rate and sold units.

How should a dealership measure BDC performance?+

Measure the whole chain, not one department. Internet leads and phone calls in, response time, appointments set, appointments shown, and sold units out. Dealership BDC training that only inspects activity counts tends to produce busy logs and flat sales. Ratios between each stage are what expose where the automotive internet lead process is actually leaking.

Why aren't our internet leads turning into sold units?+

It is rarely one cause. Common contributors are slow first response, appointments confirmed by email instead of a live conversation, and a sales-floor handoff where the shown guest is never introduced to a manager. Dealership lead conversion is a storewide outcome — the BDC can create opportunity that the floor never converts, and the numbers usually make that visible before anyone argues about it.

How can a BDC improve appointment show rate?+

BDC show rate improvement usually comes from three habits: confirm with a live human rather than an automated text alone, give the guest a specific reason and a specific person to ask for, and have a manager touch the appointment the morning it is scheduled. Track shows by setter and by source so coaching is based on the number instead of impressions.

Should BDC and sales-floor phone training use the same standards?+

In most stores, yes. When BDC phone training and floor phone training use different word tracks and different standards, guests hear two different dealerships and the handoff gets shaky. One standard, inspected by one set of managers, tends to make BDC process improvement stick far longer than department-specific scripts.

How do I show my GM where the BDC process is leaking?+

Show ratios, not opinions. Put lead and call volume, response time, set rate, show rate, and sold units side by side, and let the weakest ratio point to the next conversation. Framing it as a storewide implementation gap — rather than a BDC problem — keeps the discussion about process and usually gets a faster yes on fixing it.
